概要 Enosuke Ashida was one of the most outstanding educational practitioners in the earlier period of the New Education Movement in Japan. His often-recognized contribution was to Japanese writing education through the proposal of a new composition pedagogy called Zuiisendai, or a method of free composition. Ashida uniquely introduced the idea of self-motivation in writing education, which enabled children to express themselves. This idea went beyond the motif of New Education and has been repeatedly referred to by researchers and practitioners. However, how the composition contributes to the growth of children has not yet been explained. This study aims to revisit Ashida's concept of “Self” in Zuiisendai and to demonstrate how it supports the idea of “self-formation-by-composing”.
