概要 | This article presents the relationship between children’s perception of causality and acquisition of the verb-particle construction in English. Based on the study of developmental psychology, children perceive the causal relationship in their early stage of development. Also, they encode such a causal event by using the verb-particle construction rather than the corresponding Latin verb. From the view point of the notion of Markedness, the unmarked form is easier to acquire than the marked one because of its simple form and frequency distribution. However, in fact, in the verb-particle construction, there is no difference between the unmarked form and the marked one excluding the position of the particle. That is to say, the selection of this construction cannot be attributed to the form. They can select the unmarked form and the marked one in accordance with the described causal situation. |
